Lose Weight

Exercise Prescription for a Healthy Lifestyle

Contrary to current popular belief, there is no single fad diet, nor exercise program, nor exercise machine that will keep you fit. THERE IS NO HOLY GRAIL to life fitness, except discipline and belief in yourself. You have to want to be fit, and you can be, if you believe in yourself, and follow some basic guidelines.

The basics of fitness and general health are very simple. Excess weight and poor eating habits contribute to a majority of the health problems plaguing America. Just look at the statistics concerning obesity in our society. And the reason is very clear: if we eat more calories than we expend through basic metabolism and exercise, we will gain weight. And it doesn't really matter where the calories come from in this simplistic view:

TOO MANY CALORIES coupled with TOO LITTLE EXERCISE equals TOO MUCH WEIGHT

We can get into a huge discussion about where those calories should come from, but the best advice we always give to clients is:

  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals based on the USDA food pyramid
  • Exercise 3 to 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes.

This fitness regimen should MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT.

If you need to lose weight, then cut calories 10 - 15%, and exercise 4 to 6 times a week for 45 - 60 minutes. Cutting calories is usually best done by cutting portions, not cutting out any of the essential food groups. We need carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to live.

  • The more complex carbohydrates are best, so avoid simple sugars.
  • Of all the fats, polyunsaturated fats are the best, so avoid saturated fats and greasy foods.
  • Lean white meats and egg whites are the best source of protein, so avoid high cholesterol red meats.

Eating a well-balanced meal lets you enjoy the foods you love (though some of them in moderation), without starving yourself nor depriving you of foods that you desire. The bottom line: eat healthy, well-balanced meals based on the Harvard University Pyramid and exercise.
